4 Undeniable Importance of Bible Reading

Bible reading is a necessity for all believers. Just as our physical body needs nourishment from our food, our soul also needs nourishment from the Word of God. For this reason, Christians must know the importance of Bible reading.

God uses the Bible to communicate with us. It is where we read His commands toward us. And it’s also where we can learn His will for us.

Unsurprisingly, many believers don’t know how to act as Christians simply because they don’t read the Bible. Also, because of the lack or absence of Bible reading, they have no idea what the will of God is in their life.

Some blame technology and busyness for neglecting Bible reading. However, I believe that the desire and willingness to read the Bible are lacking in most Christians.

Through this blog, I hope you can find the desire to read the Bible as often as you can. Just as Moses commanded Joshua, we must also learn to prioritize the Word of God in our daily activities.

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Joshua 1:8

Importance of Bible reading: It makes us wise concerning salvation.

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:15

Our salvation is the most critical need that we must attend to. Good works cannot save us or any other religion. We must trust the Lord Jesus Christ that He is the only way to Heaven. We know this truth because it is what the Bible teaches us (Ephesians 2:8-9.)

However, so many false teachings concerning salvation can be confusing even to deeply rooted believers. That’s why our knowledge of the Bible will assure us that what we believe is true. Also, this is not only for our assurance but also for defending the faith.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

1 Peter 3:15

We must be ready to provide biblical verses that will substantiate our beliefs and answer the question of those needing an answer. And we must also be prepared to defend our faith from those who attack our salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Importance of Bible reading: It teaches us how to live right.

The Bible is God’s instruction on how to live our lives. We are ambassadors of the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20.) Therefore, we must represent Him according to His standard in the Word of God.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2 Timothy 3:16

The Bible teaches us what is right (doctrine,) warns us to stay in the right (reproof,) shows us how to make it right (correction,) and teaches us to continue in the right (instruction in righteousness.) So to be the right kind of Christian, husband, employee, friend, or neighbor, we must practice daily Bible reading.

The Bible is similar to a plumb line. To determine whether a structure stands straight, carpenters and engineers will use a plumb line. It is the standard they use to compare the alignment of a structure. The same is true with the Bible. It is where we compare our lifestyle to whether we live right.

That’s why we must not compare our life to others. We might develop pride or envy. We must compare our life with the Word of God.

Importance of Bible reading: It prepares us to fight temptation.

The Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you away from the Bible.

Edifying the saints

The devil is always busy tempting us to sin. And he will never stop until he finds a way to destroy our testimony, effectiveness, and fellowship with God. The Bible calls him a lion, always looking for its next victim, just waiting for the right time to strike (1 Peter 5:8.)

You are mistaken if you think you can overcome temptation on your own. The only way to overcome temptation is through the Word of God.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Ephesians 6:17

In Ephesians 6, we can read the whole armor of God. God gave us a helmet, breastplate, shield, belt, and shoes, but He only gave us one weapon. That is none other than the Word of God.

Many Christians wonder why they always fall into sin. It’s because they deliberately neglect the Bible. We can only overcome temptation when we learn to practice daily Bible reading.

The devil tempts each one of us every day. He will never stop until he can take down a child of God. Therefore, we must also read God’s Word daily to overcome the devil’s schemes.

Importance of Bible reading: It strengthens us in times of trouble.

My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.

Psalms 119:28

All of us have problems that we go through every day. Some have light burdens, while others have the heaviest of burdens. If we are going to be able to carry our burdens, we’ll need strength from the Word of God.

Some people are depressed and defeated by the burdens that they carry. But for us believers, we have the Bible that can give us the strength to continue taking the load.

However, why do Christians often neglect the Bible when in trouble? This seems to be a contradiction. But it does happen in many instances.

The reason behind this is pride. We think that we can do it on our own. But the reason why God gave us a burden in the first place is to humble us and make us depend on Him. So as long as we have the opportunity, even in times of trouble, we must practice daily Bible reading.

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Joshua 1:8

Notice that our success is dependent on whether or not we read, meditate, and apply the Word of God, therefore, if we want to be victorious Christians. We must learn to start and practice daily Bible reading.
